Annabel Lyon (born 1971) is a Canadian novelist, short-story writer, and literary educator. Her work ranges across short fiction, novellas, fiction for younger readers, and novels for adults, with a particular interest in the moral pressures that shape intimate relationships and historical imagination. Her first book, Oxygen, a story collection, appeared in 2000; it was followed by the novella collection The Best Thing for You.
Lyon’s first adult novel, The Golden Mean, reimagines Aristotle’s period as tutor to the young Alexander of Macedon. The novel brought her wide recognition in Canada and abroad, and was later followed by The Sweet Girl, a companion novel centred on Aristotle’s daughter, Pythias. Her later novel Consent turns to a contemporary setting and intertwines the lives of two pairs of sisters, examining care, obligation, and autonomy.
For The Golden Mean, Lyon received the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize in 2009; in 2015, she received the Writers’ Trust Engel Findley Award for her body of work. She is a professor affiliated with the School of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia, where she supervises graduate research in creative writing.
