The Victory of Geraldine Gull

by Joan Clark

The Victory of Geraldine Gull is Joan Clark’s acclaimed 1988 novel set in a Swampy Cree community on the western shore of Hudson Bay. Centred on the fiercely independent Geraldine Gull, it portrays a northern community facing social pressures and the threat of flooding while exploring survival, dignity, cultural conflict and self-determination. A young white woman who arrives to teach art also discovers that she has much to learn from the people around her.

The novel received the Canadian Authors Association Award for Fiction and was shortlisted for both the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction and the Books in Canada First Novel Award, making it a notable work of modern Canadian literature.
