Father Figure
Father Figure is Zun Lee’s intimate documentary photobook exploring Black fatherhood and family life. Working in expressive black-and-white photography, Lee records fathers and children in everyday domestic and community settings, emphasizing affection, vulnerability, responsibility, and the ordinary gestures through which family relationships are sustained.
The project offers a thoughtful counterpoint to stereotypical representations of absent Black fathers. Its photographs grew from close, long-term relationships with participating families in cities across the United States and Canada. The book contains 61 photographs across 124 pages, with additional texts by Zun Lee, Teju Cole, and Trymaine Lee.
Published by Ceiba in September 2014, this is the first edition from a limited run of 1,000 copies. It is a horizontally formatted hardcover with printed pictorial boards and no dust jacket by design. Father Figure was shortlisted for the 2014 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award.
This copy is in Very Good condition. The boards show light shelf and edge wear, including mild rubbing or bumping at some corners and spine ends. The representative interior spreads photographed appear clean and present well, with no writing, stains, or tears visible on the pages shown.
