This darkly comic political and media satire follows Edgar Kellogg, a former corporate lawyer who takes a foreign-correspondent assignment in a fictional Portuguese region troubled by a separatist terrorist movement. Sent to replace a charismatic missing reporter, Edgar becomes entangled in questions of journalism, terrorism, popularity and the power certain personalities exert over those around them.

Shriver is also the author of We Need to Talk About Kevin, winner of the 2005 Orange Prize for Fiction, now known as the Women's Prize for Fiction. The New Republic was first published in 2012 and showcases her interest in provocative social questions through sharp, satirical fiction.
