The Ash Garden

by Dennis Bock

The Ash Garden is Dennis Bock’s acclaimed first novel, published in Canada by HarperFlamingoCanada in 2001. Moving among Hiroshima, wartime Europe, North America, and the decades following the Second World War, it follows three lives profoundly altered by the atomic bomb: a Japanese survivor, a German-born scientist connected to its development, and his Austrian-Jewish wife. The novel explores memory, guilt, survival, responsibility, and the lasting human consequences of war.

This is the first Canadian hardcover edition and first printing, with “First edition” stated on the copyright page and a complete 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 number line. It is flat signed by Dennis Bock on the title page, with no inscription visible, and retains its original dust jacket. ISBN 0-00-225524-3.

The Ash Garden received the 2002 Canada-Japan Literary Award and was recognized by several major literary prizes, including finalist or shortlist attention from the Books in Canada First Novel Award, the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Prize, the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
