Claudius by Douglas Jackson is a fast-moving historical novel set during Rome’s invasion of Britain in AD 43. Emperor Claudius seeks the military triumph that will secure his rule, while the British war chief Caratacus attempts to unite the tribes for a last stand. Caught within the invading force is Rufus, keeper of the emperor’s elephant, who discovers that both he and the animal have a special role in the coming battle.

Published in London by Bantam Press in 2009, this hardcover is a first edition and first printing, confirmed by the complete number line ending in 1. The book carries the cased ISBN 9780593060629 and retains its pictorial dust jacket.

Very Good overall, with light shelf and handling wear visible at the dust-jacket extremities. The dust jacket is protected in a removable clear plastic cover. The photographed title and copyright pages appear clean in the areas shown aside from the author’s intended signature, date and inscription.
