War Child

by Emmanuel Jal & Megan Lloyd-Davies

War Child: A Child Soldier’s Story is the memoir of Emmanuel Jal, written with Megan Lloyd Davies. Jal recounts his childhood amid Sudan’s civil war, his recruitment and experiences as a child soldier, his escape from conflict, and his later transformation into a musician and humanitarian advocate.

This St. Martin’s Press hardcover is the February 2009 first edition and first printing, confirmed by the complete number line ending in 1. It is signed by Emmanuel Jal on the front free endpaper. A separate previous-owner gift inscription to “Amma,” wishing her a happy 75th birthday, is signed “Love, Priya” and dated 2009; this writing is unrelated to the author signature.

The memoir is closely connected to the acclaimed documentary about Jal’s life, which won the Cadillac Audience Award at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival. The book offers a firsthand account of childhood, conflict, displacement, survival, and the use of music and advocacy in the aftermath of war.

The pages have toning, and the previous-owner inscription remains present on the signed page. The hardcover retains its dust jacket, which is now protected in a removable clear plastic cover.
