The Group of Seven in Western Canada
The Group of Seven in Western Canada is a substantial illustrated art book examining the celebrated Canadian painters’ travels, subjects and artistic legacy across the Prairies, Rocky Mountains, West Coast and northern regions. General editor Catharine M. Mastin is joined by essay contributors Robert Stacey, Marcia Crosby, Liz Wylie, Anna Hudson and Ann Davis.
Originally created to accompany a major travelling exhibition organized by the Glenbow Museum, the volume places the Group’s Western Canadian work at the centre of its story rather than treating it as an extension of the better-known Ontario landscapes. Its essays discuss the artists’ responses to mountains, coasts, Indigenous cultural imagery, nationalism and the development of modern Canadian visual identity. The 208-page book is illustrated throughout with approximately 130 paintings, related images and photographs.
This is the 2008 second edition from Prospero Books, produced by Key Porter Books Limited, and is the first printing of that edition. It is a large-format hardcover measuring approximately 26.7 × 26.6 × 2.0 cm and weighing approximately 1.29 kg, with an illustrated dust jacket.
The book is in Very Good condition with minor visible shelf and edge wear. A previous owner’s “Property of” inscription appears on the front endpaper, and the owner’s name has been covered with black marker. The photographed interior spread appears clean and bright, with clear text and strong colour reproduction. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
