L.M. Montgomery
A signed first edition, first printing of L.M. Montgomery by acclaimed Canadian novelist Jane Urquhart, issued by Penguin Canada in 2009 as part of the Extraordinary Canadians series. This hardcover includes its dust jacket and an introduction by series editor John Ralston Saul.
Urquhart presents a concise literary biography of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of Anne of Green Gables. Rather than offering only a chronological account, the book examines the contrasts between Montgomery’s imaginative fiction and a private life shaped by loneliness, social expectations, professional struggles and depression. It also considers her attachment to place, her dual roles as a celebrated writer and minister’s wife, and her influence on later Canadian authors.
The title page is personally inscribed to Heather and signed in blue ink by Jane Urquhart. The copyright page states “First published 2009” and carries a complete 1–10 number line, confirming the first printing.
Very Good overall, as reported by the seller, with light shelf wear and rubbing to the dust jacket and a faint vertical surface mark visible on the rear panel. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
