Inkling
Signed and personalized first Canadian edition, first printing of Inkling by Kenneth Oppel, published by HarperCollins in 2018. Oppel has signed an illustrated page with the inscription “To Henry.” The complete number line ends in 1, confirming the first printing. This pictorial hardcover was issued without a dust jacket.
In this imaginative middle-grade novel, an inkblot comes to life from a grieving artist's sketchbook and becomes an unexpected friend to his son, Ethan. Inkling can absorb words and pictures, create illustrations and take on new forms, but his unusual gifts soon raise questions about creativity, responsibility and what the family truly needs. The story blends humour and adventure with themes of art, loss, family and healing.
Sydney Smith's expressive black-and-white artwork is integrated throughout the story, giving the living inkblot and the creative world around him a distinctive visual character. The novel was named a New York Times Notable Book and was a 2020 Silver Birch Award fiction nominee.
Very Good condition, with light visible shelf and edge wear to the pictorial boards. The representative interior spread photographed appears clean and intact, with clear text and illustration. Please review all photographs carefully, as they show the actual copy and form part of the description.
