Into the Planet: My Life as a Cave Diver is Jill Heinerth’s gripping illustrated memoir of a life spent exploring submerged caves, polar environments, and other hidden places beneath the Earth’s surface. Blending adventure, science, environmental observation, and personal reflection, Heinerth recounts the preparation, fear, difficult decisions, and human costs associated with extreme underwater exploration.
Heinerth is internationally known for pioneering cave and polar dives, including historic exploration inside an Antarctic iceberg. Her account also considers the challenges of working as a woman in a demanding, male-dominated field and the scientific value of underwater exploration, from freshwater research to documenting changing environments.
