You Say to Brick
You Say to Brick: The Life of Louis Kahn is Wendy Lesser’s extensively researched biography of the influential twentieth-century architect. Lesser combines the story of Kahn’s complex personal and professional life with vivid consideration of major buildings such as the Salk Institute, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Phillips Exeter Academy Library, the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
The illustrated volume approaches Kahn through both biography and direct encounters with his architecture, exploring the relationship between the man, his materials, and the public institutions he designed. The book received the Marfield Prize and PEN America Los Angeles’s 2018 Literary Award in Research Nonfiction and was a finalist for the 2018 PEN/Bograd Weld Prize for Biography.
This 2017 Farrar, Straus and Giroux hardcover is a first edition, second printing, with the number line ending in 2. It is flat signed by Wendy Lesser on the title page without a visible personalization and includes the original dust jacket. Black-and-white photographs and other illustrations appear throughout.
Very Good overall, with light visible handling or edge wear to the dust jacket. The photographed title and copyright pages are legible, and the representative illustrated interior spread shows no obvious handwriting, staining, tears, or heavy toning in the area pictured. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. The book will be packaged carefully to help protect it in transit.
