The Lives of the Muses: Nine Women & the Artists They Inspired
The Lives of the Muses: Nine Women & the Artists They Inspired by Francine Prose, the National Book Award-finalist author of Blue Angel. This illustrated work blends biography, cultural history, literary criticism, and commentary to examine nine women whose relationships with celebrated artists helped shape important creative works.
Prose considers muses including Hester Thrale, Alice Liddell, Elizabeth Siddal, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Gala Dalí, Lee Miller, Charis Weston, Suzanne Farrell, and Yoko Ono. Rather than treating the muse as merely a passive source of inspiration, the book explores relationships that ranged from romance and obsession to artistic partnership and genuine collaboration. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout.
This is the 2002 Canadian first edition and first printing, published by HarperFlamingoCanada through HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. The copyright page states “First edition” and carries the complete number line 987654321. The hardcover comes with its original dust jacket and is personally inscribed and signed by Francine Prose on the title page: “To Anne — Best wishes, Francine Prose.” Faint ink transfer or smudging on the facing copyright page is consistent with the inscription having been handwritten.
The book and dust jacket are in Very Good condition, with minor visible edge and corner wear to the jacket. The photographed interior example is clean-looking and shows one of the book's black-and-white illustrations. Please check all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description and show the actual copy offered.
