A Death in Belmont
A flat-signed first edition, first printing of A Death in Belmont by Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect Storm. Published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2006, this hardcover includes its original dust jacket and bears Junger’s large black-ink signature directly on the title page, without a personalized inscription. An Autographed Copy sticker is affixed to the front jacket.
Junger’s literary true-crime narrative revisits the 1963 murder of Bessie Goldberg in Belmont, Massachusetts, during the Boston Strangler era. It follows the intersecting stories of Goldberg, Roy Smith—the Black handyman convicted of her murder—and Albert DeSalvo, who was working as a carpenter at Junger’s childhood home on the day of the crime. The book examines the evidence, the racial climate surrounding Smith’s prosecution, and the enduring uncertainty over who committed the murder.
A Death in Belmont was a 2007 Edgar Award nominee for Best Fact Crime. This copy is especially collectible as the stated first edition and first printing, confirmed by the complete number line beginning with 1.
The book and dust jacket are in Very Good condition. The jacket has light edge and corner wear, minor rubbing, and scattered surface marks. The heavy title-page signature has some visible ink show-through or transfer on the reverse copyright page. The photographed copy will be carefully packaged to help protect the book and dust jacket in transit.
