Set at a neglected rural hospital in post-apartheid South Africa, the novel follows the uneasy relationship between cynical physician Frank Eloff and idealistic newcomer Laurence Waters. Their contrasting outlooks form the centre of a tense literary examination of conscience, political transition, and the lingering demands of the past. The Good Doctor was shortlisted for the 2003 Man Booker Prize and marked Galgut’s first Booker shortlisting; he later won the 2021 Booker Prize for The Promise.

This copy is personally inscribed to Anita on the title page with warm wishes, signed by Damon Galgut, and dated October 24, 2003. The dated presentation inscription is from the book’s publication year.
