Magnetic North: Imagining Canada in Painting 1910–40

by Martina Weinhart and Georgiana Uhlyarik

Magnetic North: Imagining Canada in Painting 1910–40 is a substantial, richly illustrated exhibition catalogue devoted to early Canadian modernist landscape painting. Published by Prestel in 2021, this English-language hardcover was produced for an exhibition organized by the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada.

The book examines how Tom Thomson, Emily Carr, members of the Group of Seven and associated artists developed a distinctive visual language for the Canadian landscape. Alongside celebrated paintings of forests, lakes, mountains and the Arctic, its essays and interviews reconsider the relationship between landscape imagery, national identity, industrial development and Indigenous perspectives. The volume contains approximately 140 colour illustrations across 240 pages.

This large-format art book measures approximately 23.5 x 27.5 cm and has a published weight of approximately 1.244 kg. It is a hardcover without a dust jacket by design.

This copy is brand new and remains enclosed in its original clear plastic seal. The photographed exterior presents well, with no specific damage apparent in the supplied views. Because the original seal remains intact, the interior and printing statement have not been inspected.
