Graphic Witness
Graphic Witness brings together four wordless graphic novels by Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, Giacomo Patri and Laurence Hyde, selected and introduced by Canadian printmaker George A. Walker. This substantial illustrated anthology presents The Passion of a Man, Wild Pilgrimage, White Collar and Southern Cross through powerful sequences of black-and-white images.
Created between the early and mid-20th century, these visual narratives explore labour, class conflict, oppression, war and social injustice without relying on dialogue. The collection also places the works within the development of the wordless novel and its influence on later graphic storytelling.
This is the 2007 Firefly Books softcover first printing. The copy is signed and inscribed in an especially unusual reversed or mirror-writing style on the page crediting Walker as selector and introduction writer. The handwritten text is partly cropped in the supplied close-up and has not been fully transcribed.
Very Good overall, with light handling and edge wear consistent with careful use. The photographed copyright page and representative illustrated interior page appear clean and legible, without obvious staining, tears or annotations in the areas shown. No dust jacket was issued with this softcover edition. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. The book will be packed carefully for protection in transit.
