Tavis Smiley

Tavis Smiley is an acclaimed American broadcaster, New York Times bestselling author, media entrepreneur, and philanthropist whose decades of advocacy have established him as a premier progressive voice for political justice, civic engagement, and socio-economic empowerment in Black America. Born in Gulfport, Mississippi, and raised in Indiana, Smiley formalized his early career by studying at Indiana University Bloomington before entering public service as a top aide to the late Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. He vaulted to national media prominence as the iconic host of BET Tonight with Tavis Smiley on Black Entertainment Television, later making historic strides as the first African American to host a signature daily show on National Public Radio (NPR) alongside his long-running, Emmy-nominated late-night talk show, Tavis Smiley, on PBS. An exceptionally prolific writer and compiler of contemporary thought, Smiley has penned sixteen books, anchored by his deeply reflective personal memoir What I Know for Sure: My Story of Growing Up in America and his monumental, history-making edited volume, The Covenant with Black America, which became the very first nonfiction book from a Black-owned publisher to top the New York Times bestseller list. Driven by his dedication to community building, he founded the Tavis Smiley Foundation to foster youth leadership and combat endemic poverty. Honored by TIME magazine as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" and recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Smiley has seamlessly engineered a massive independent media empire as the founder of SmileyAudioMedia.
