Simon Rich is an American humorist, fiction writer, and television writer whose work brings comic exaggeration to contemporary relationships, work, technology, and social ambition. He has contributed fiction and humor to *The New Yorker*, where his bylined work has appeared across the magazine’s fiction and “Shouts & Murmurs” sections.
Rich’s books include the novel Elliot Allagash, the story collection The Last Girlfriend on Earth, and Spoiled Brats, a collection of comic stories. His writing has also moved between page and screen: he created, executive-produced, and wrote the FXX comedy Man Seeking Woman, an adaptation connected to The Last Girlfriend on Earth. He has written for Saturday Night Live, Pixar, and The Simpsons, and later created the TBS series Miracle Workers.
His literary work received the 2019 Thurber Prize for American Humor for Hits & Misses. In television, he received a 2025 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special as a writer on SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Rich continues to publish short work in The New Yorker, sustaining a career that spans humor writing, fiction, and television comedy.
