Nancy Atherton (born 1955) is an American mystery novelist best known for the Aunt Dimity books. Born in Chicago, she lived in rural Illinois until 2012 and is associated with Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her fiction centers on the blend of village mystery, family life, and the supernatural presence of Aunt Dimity.
Atherton began the series with *Aunt Dimity's Death* in 1992. The novel introduces Lori Shepherd, who discovers that the Aunt Dimity of her mother’s stories was a real person and later receives guidance from her phantom. Subsequent books return to Lori and the English village of Finch, using puzzles, local histories, and relationships as recurring elements.
