Joshua Knelman is a Canadian journalist, editor, and nonfiction author whose work brings investigative reporting to subjects shaped by crime, culture, and corporate power. A founding member of the editorial staff of The Walrus, he has also written for Toronto Life, the National Post, and The Globe and Mail. He is based in Toronto.
Knelman’s first book, Hot Art: Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen Art, developed from his National Magazine Award–winning Walrus feature “Artful Crimes.” Drawing on more than four years of reporting, the book follows the international traffic in stolen artworks through the perspectives of thieves, detectives, and other participants in the art market. His later book, Firebrand, examines the global tobacco business through the experiences of a lawyer working within it.
His work on Hot Art received the 2012 Crime Writers of Canada Award for Best Crime Nonfiction and the 2012 Edna Staebler Award for Creative Non-Fiction. The National Magazine Awards has also documented his Gold Award for “Artful Crimes,” recognition that helped turn the article into a book project. Penguin Random House’s author page identifies him as an award-winning author and a founding member of The Walrus editorial staff.
