Author profile

John Sandford

John Sandford is the globally celebrated pen name of John Roswell Camp, an American novelist, premier thriller writer, and Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist whose pulse-pounding, razor-sharp crime fiction has permanently redefined the landscape of contemporary police procedurals. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Camp formalized his narrative craft at the University of Iowa, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and later earning a Master of Arts in American Studies. He launched a formidable, two-decade career in print journalism, establishing a sharp investigative edge as a reporter and columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. His exceptional reportorial achievements culminated in 1986 when he won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for a riveting, multi-part series detailing the emotional and financial ruin of a Minnesota farming family during the midwestern agricultural crisis. Transitioning into full-time fiction at the suggestion of his publisher, he debuted his legendary pen name in 1989 with Rules of Prey, introducing the brilliant, wealthy, and unorthodox investigator Lucas Davenport. This initial blockbuster sparked the multi-decade Prey universe, a massive commercial powerhouse in which all subsequent installments have hit the New York Times bestseller list, many debuting at number one. Sandford expanded his narrative dominion through multiple critically acclaimed spin-offs and standalone projects, including the technology-focused Kidd series, the laid-back Virgil Flowers investigations, the Letty Davenport thrillers, the science-fiction odyssey Saturn Run, and the Singular Menace young-adult trilogy co-authored with his wife, Michele Cook. Moving through 2025 and 2026, Sandford continues to dominate crime fiction circles with unstoppable publishing momentum. Following the massive chart success of his thirty-fifth Prey installment, Lethal Prey, Sandford has captured premium editorial headlines in mid-2026 with his explosive thirty-sixth series blockbuster, Revenge Prey, a high-stakes espionage thriller published by G.P. Putnam's Sons that follows Lucas Davenport as he uncovers a deadly internal security leak to protect a high-ranking Russian defector from an elite international hit team.
