Craig Russell (born 1956) is a British writer, described by his publisher as a Scottish author, whose crime fiction has reached readers in twenty-five languages. His work includes the Jan Fabel thrillers, set in Hamburg, and the Lennox noir mysteries; the contrast between these series places German urban crime and mid-century Glasgow among the principal settings of his fiction.
His first Jan Fabel novel, Blood Eagle, was published by Hutchinson in 2005. It introduces the Hamburg police investigator Jan Fabel in a case involving ritual murder and Viking legend. Russell later developed the Fabel sequence alongside the Lennox novels and standalone fiction including The Devil Aspect and Hyde. Five Jan Fabel novels have been adapted as films for ARD, Germany's national public broadcaster.
Russell received the CWA Dagger in the Library in 2008. He won Bloody Scotland's McIlvanney Prize for The Ghosts of Altona in 2015 and for Hyde in 2021, making him the prize's only two-time winner according to his official biography. He has also received the Polizeistern from Hamburg police; his official site describes him as its only non-German recipient.
