Andy McNab (born 1959) is a British novelist and former British Army soldier, known for military memoir, espionage fiction, and writing for younger readers. He served with the Royal Green Jackets and later with 22 SAS Regiment; publisher biographies identify him as the commander of the Bravo Two Zero patrol during the Gulf War. His account of that patrol, Bravo Two Zero, brought his military experience to a wide reading public.
McNab subsequently developed the Nick Stone and Tom Buckingham thriller series, alongside nonfiction based on his service. His fiction commonly draws on the procedures, settings, and moral pressures of military and intelligence work. He has also written for teenage readers. The catalogued Boy Soldier, co-written with Robert Rigby, begins a four-book series centred on Danny Watts and combines a coming-of-age story with an espionage plot.
His service was recognised with the Military Medal and Distinguished Conduct Medal. Beyond his writing, McNab has supported literacy initiatives: the National Literacy Trust awarded him the inaugural Ruth Rendell Award in 2016. In the 2017 Birthday Honours he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to literacy and charity. His career therefore connects military experience, popular thriller writing, young-adult fiction, and advocacy for reading.
